The immortal
At the genesis of any true innovation lies an idea — often fleeting, ethereal, nearly elusive — that emerges in the mind of the researcher like a sudden flash of insight. The idea in question, in the case we examine here, was born from a simple observation: the recurring accidents due to poor visibility of cyclists in urban environments. This seemingly banal observation became the cornerstone of an ambitious R&D project, driven by a determined will to reconcile safety, ergonomics, and aesthetics.
From intuition to a formalized concept
An idea, in order to claim the status of a concept, must be extracted from abstraction and translated into functional language. This transition requires both rigor and method. Thus, in an initial exploratory phase, we immersed ourselves in the field — interviewing users, studying traffic dynamics, and collecting behavioral data.
This investigation revealed several functional requirements our device had to meet:
1. enhanced visibility, day and night
2. autonomous power supply
3. resistance to weather conditions
4. ease of integration with different types of bicycles
The synthesis of these findings led to the outline of a preliminary conceptual model: an intelligent jacket made of photoluminescent fibers and motion sensors, capable of anticipating the cyclist's gestures to signal intentions in real time.
Modeling and technical feasibility
Formalizing the concept led to a CAD model within a digital environment, enabling us to evaluate bulk, ergonomics, and the constraints of electronic integration. This modeling phase, far from being anecdotal, was the scene of numerous iterations: every curve adjustment, every design inflection was subjected to trade-offs between aesthetics, cost, and efficiency.
We then conducted a technical feasibility analysis of the proposed modules: low-power microcontrollers, flexible polymer batteries, woven optical fibers. Each component was assessed for both robustness and compatibility with small-scale manufacturing constraints.
Rapid prototyping: from virtual to tangible
The transition from digital model to functional prototype was carried out according to rapid prototyping principles. Thanks to 3D printing and precision machining, we produced the first protective shells and control boxes. The smart textiles were ordered from a specialized European supplier after several weeks of benchmarking.
The initial assembly, although imperfect, allowed for a first functional demonstration. The illumination of the light bands in sync with hand gestures marked a decisive moment: the idea had finally taken shape — not without goosebumps.
User testing and successive iterations
Every prototype, no matter how polished it appears, must face the trial of real-world use. We entrusted our smart jacket to a panel of urban cyclists selected for their diversity of profiles and practices.
Their feedback was uncompromising:
1. too stiff around the shoulders
2. insufficient battery life for long rides
3. not very visible in heavy rain
These criticisms became avenues for improvement. We revised the base fabric, chose a more flexible waterproof layer, and optimized the energy management firmware.
By the third iteration, the panel’s approval was unmistakable. Not only did the prototype fulfill its functional promise, but it also elicited an emotional response: the sensation of being protected, seen, acknowledged.
Toward thoughtful industrialization
With the stabilized prototype in hand, we initiated a study for potential industrialization. This process included:
1. a cost/benefit analysis of each component
2. identification of reliable suppliers
3. assessment of necessary certifications (CE, RoHS)
A strategic reflection on product positioning (premium niche vs. mass market) led to the definition of two deployment scenarios, each with distinct business plans.
This year-long case study, which we conducted with subcontractors, vividly illustrates that applied research is never a straight path. From the initial spark to the tangible prototype, each step proved to be a dialectic between scientific rigor and creative intuition, between material constraints and human aspirations.
